Dialect and slang in Madrid

Dialect and slang in Madrid

Just like any city, Madrid has its own variation of the Spanish language through the use of dialect and slang. Here are some examples…

‘Majo/a’ (pronounced ‘ma-ho’/‘ma-ha’) is used to describe someone who is kind or generous.

‘Mazo’ (pronounced ‘ma-tho’) can be used in place of ‘mucho’, meaning a lot

‘La marcha’ is slang for saying the nightlife in Madrid, usually consisting of bar crawls in certain areas such as Sol, Malasaña, or La Latina.

‘Tío/tía’ means uncle/auntie, but in Madrid it can also mean ‘dude/bro/man’ or ‘chick’.

Also, some of their pronunciations are a little different, for example instead of pronouncing all the letters in ‘pescado’ (fish), madrileños (people from Madrid) often miss the ‘d’ and so pronounce it as ‘pesc-ow’. Other words that end in ‘ado’ such as ‘helado’ (ice-cream) sometimes are pronounced in this way too- this can take some getting used to!
