Remember, Spain runs on food & vibes, not clocks!
Desayuno ("ehl deh-sah-yoo-noh") - Breakfast
Time: Around 7:00-10:00
This is something light rather than a big meal. For example, the classic ‘pan con tomate’ which is toasted bread with grated tomato mixed with olive oil. Or something sweet like ‘bizcocho’, a simple sponge cake.
Almuerzo ("ahl-mwehr-thoh") - Mid-morning snack
Time: Around 10:30-12:00
This is often something small like a ‘bocadillo’ (sandwich) or a slice of ‘tortilla de patatas’ (potato omelette).
Comida ("koh-mee-dah") - Lunch
Time: Around 14:00-15:30
This is the biggest meal of the day! Typical dishes include; paella (a hearty rice dish from Valencia), lentejas (lentil stew), pescado a la plancha (grilled fish) and pollo asado (roast chicken). Often followed by a ‘postre’ (pudding) and ‘café’ (coffee)
Merienda ("meh-ryehn-dah") - Afternoon snack
Time: Around 17:00 and 18:30
This snack usually consists of something like ‘churros con chocolate’ or ‘un pastel’ (cake or pastry). 'Merienda' is especially common for children- but adults join in too!
Cena ("theh-nah") - Evening meal
Time: Around 21:00-23:00
This is when ‘tapas’ comes into its own! These dishes are the perfect light, social nibbles to share with family and friends. NOTE- Paella is definitely NOT eaten for this meal!
