Where does ‘del’ come from?

Where does ‘del’ come from?

When the words ‘de’ (which means ‘from’ or ‘of’ depending on the context) and ‘el’ (which means ‘the’ in the masculine singular form) are next to each other, they become ‘del’.
For example, ‘of the centre’ in Spanish would become ‘del centro’ rather than ‘de el centro’.
