In Andalucía, where Málaga is located, Castilian Spanish is spoken by all inhabitants. However, the southern Spanish accent is quite distinct and is sometimes very difficult to understand! Often, the letter ‘s’ is dropped from the end of a word, as well as the letter ‘d’, hence the pronunciation isn’t as clear. However, of course like any accent, once you listen to it more often and become accustomed to it, it will become easier.
Some slang that you may hear in the streets of Málaga are:
- Perita = something or someone that is cool, nice or funny.
- Pila/pechá = other words for ‘mucho’, meaning a lot.
- Mijilla = opposite of ‘pila/pechá’, and means something small, or just a little bit.
- Chalao = if someone is a ‘chalao’, they are crazy or an idiot.
