‘Need to know’ grammar terminology

Once you know what all of these words mean it is a lot easier to learn a second language!

Nouns- These are a thing, person or place. Eg. The school, A boy etc.

Adjectives- These describe a noun. Eg. The water was cold. The dog is black.

Adverbs- These describe a verb. Eg. He walked slowly. They laughed loudly.

Verbs- These are actions or ‘doing’ words. Eg. We spoke on the phone. I cycle to work.

Infinitives- This is the basic form of the verb that doesn’t apply to a person or tense. All the different versions and tenses of verbs come from the infinitive. In Spanish the infinitive always ends in either ‘ar, ‘er’ or ir’. The infinitive is ‘to + activity’. Eg. to speak, to cycle, to walk, to laugh etc.
